I am sitting here on this crisp late autumn day in one of your old haunts—Austin, Texas. As you know, today is the day of the Virgin of Conception, and yesterday was the birthday of your Brazilian friend and my son Charlie. Before I called Charlie yesterday, I went to read something from his chart, and realized I had never even pulled his chart. And so I calculated it, and since it was his birthday, when I went to look at the aspects, I saw Sun Conjunct Natal Sun. And I thought of course! But I’d never heard it that way. Sun conjunct Natal Sun is a very very auspicious astrological event!
Só you know that we came to Austin with Josie and Tier to celebrate the Eve of the night of the Virgin of Conception with the church. It was the ten year anniversary of the first time I visited here. We sang and danced until about 02:00 in the morning, and so this morning I have woken up with the AirBnb full of sleepy people and heated up a cold brew coffee on the gas stove, vanilla flavor with lots of cream.
I really am enjoying the free writing style. Letting go of the idea that I need to edit what I’m writing is really liberating. Even if I manifest a little bit of my tendency toward shifting attention!
Half way through the work, we took an interval of an hour. I went into the changing room to get my coat to go outside, and when I walked back into the Salão, the lights seemed really bright, and I felt like I could not see through them. Uh oh. It was the beginning of the Aura of a Migraine. And it progressed. Within about ten minutes I was seeing crinkled lines of light and experiencing blind spots in my vision. This always comes with a feeling of motion sickness, because it’s the brains way of saying something is not right.
I sat down on the floor and closed my eyes, and I could see the sort of kaleidoscope patterns that occupied the areas where my vision was distorted. We still had another four hours of singing and dancing ahead of us, and we’d traveled all the way here with a big group. I did not want to sit out, and so I just prayed for relief.
We finally started the second half. Before we started singing, the Padrinho told the story of Madrinha Julia, who at 80 years old comes to every work and starts with the rosary and stays to the end without ever leaving her spot. She is the living model of firmness. And so Trey was giving a pep talk about Madrinha Julia to encourage everyone to firm themselves and stay strong in the singing for the second half. It makes it so much better when everyone stays shoulder to shoulder, like in a canoe. If people start falling out, then the whole ship falls apart.
He recounted a story of a conversation with Madrinha Julia when someone asked her how she does this when so many people so much younger are not able to hang with her. An eight hour dance ceremony is the energetic equivalent of walking about 25 to 30 miles at 3.5 to 4 mph (I know this from my days training for triathlon when I would use my pulse to gauge my level of exertion). Her answer was that the firmness is something she calls upon to nourish her soul inside and outside the work. So her body is suffering and she is very tired, but she taps into this energy of moving forward through all of this discomfort with Joy and Love and Alegria. And it is this way the greater the physical challenge, the more firmness we receive to nourish our bodies and souls. The suffering is fuel for firmness if that makes sense.
And after sharing this story we started the second half. About fifteen minutes into it, I had to run outside to vomit. This is a normal progression of a Migraine for me. I usually start with the visual aura, and then the feeling of motion sickness, and then sometimes I will vomit, and then the headache arrives. And sure enough, as soon as I got back in from purging, I felt the head ache coming behind my right eye. When I cough right now, I can still feel it. Migraines are really the pits!
And so here I am, in the front row, holding down a line, and on top of the endurance of basically running a marathon, with a Migraine, I started to remember the lessons from Madrinha Julia. My physical state of being was like a container. There really was not much to do about it. I have to say that at 53 years old, the joints get a little sore and the muscles get a little tired, and the feet hurt, and then you add the feeling of the right side of my head being in a cider press, it was a lot to handle for me being at the level that I’m at.
And so I prayed for the firmness, and I saw how I could hold within this container, happiness and love and joy. It was by accepting the pain and discomfort as the baseline, that I was able to continue. And so with the exception of when I had to go vomit, I was able to stay in the line for every hymn. I’m still processing all the teachings I received from this profound experience.
I want to talk also a little bit about Charlie’s chart. He was born in a conjunction of Neptune and Uranus, which is a generational aspect. It came around the time of the end of the Cold War and the beginning of the “terror” war that started with Iraq. Here is what Time Passages, the app we highly recommend, says:
this conjunction gives a future oriented and idealistic individual, very aware of collective energies. This is a generational aspect, which many of your contemporaries will share with you. You may feel a pull to he serviced of humanity at large. You are likely to be interested in mysticism and the occult. You may also be inclined to nervousness (especially if the conjunction makes close aspects to the personal planets in your chart). You may feel some sense of confinement or restriction in the freedom to be who you want to be. Social ideals will strongly affect the expression of your individuality.– From the “Time Passages” App
And to couple that generational aspect, he has a really cool aspect of Mercury Conjunct Pluto. Mercury is a personal planet because it moves so fast, so only those born within a day or so of Charlie will have this aspect. This is very different from the Neptune Uranus conjunction, which forms and recedes over years.
This conjunction gives a sharp and penetrating mind, together with unusually clear and direct communication skills. You are likely to be quite interested in the occult (again), or other hidden and potentially taboo areas of thought. As a matter of fact, you might single out for study, and are able to discourse forcefully upon it. You may however become so focused on the emotional charge with which you hold these ideas that you lose a certain sense of perspective regarding them. In other words, you can be compulsively attached to your communication or the results of your mental process, so that there is a danger that you may feel yourself to be correct in what you say, in spite of what others may think. You might also need to be aware of a tendency to be manipulative in your dealings with other people, since you have a forceful will in association with your powers of speech and communication. You can be a great source of inspiration when you use your powers of insight and expression responsibly, enabling you to share your gift with humanity.– From the “Time Passages” App
I enjoyed reading this one a lot. It strikes me that this aspect confers a very powerful gift of a sharp and penetrating mind coupled with communication skills. Of course these powers can be used for good or for selfish purposes. When I first started reading Astrology, I thought these sort of conflicted messages were talking directly about me. But then I realized that they are not saying, in this example, that Charlie is manipulative. He certainly is not that. But rather that this power of a sharp mind and glib communication skills could make a person very persuasive, and this persuasiveness could be used for personal gain through manipulation of other people. But this same gift can be used for great good. It’s kind of like a gas stove. It can make an omelettes for the whole family or it can burn the bacon. It depends on how we use it right? (I know it’s not a good example.)
The final thing I noticed was Charlie has his Ascendant in Aquarius, which as you know is my Sun. When I first calculated the chart, I remembered his birth time as about 3:15 in the afternoon, which would have made his rising Taurus. So I used this initially. But then when I was on the phone with Charlie he told me his birth certificate actually said 12:02 pm, so right at mid day, which put it back in Aquarius. This really hit the nail on the head.
Aquarius Rising people have a unique approach to life. You have a rebellious nature, and appear eccentric, spontaneous and original. Your ruling planed is Uranus, also Saturn. Aquarius is forward thinking and detached, and you are likely to be ahead of your time. Thinking is your preferred mode of activity. You are scientifically minded and logical and confident in manner. You truly value society. You can also appear to be more involved in your work than with other people. You are intuitive, imaginative, and inventive, perhaps inclined to take chances, especially in the service of your goals. You can be quite noble in your deepest nature, but you also may come across as critical and demanding. Your highest purpose is found in the advancement of humanitarian ideals.– from “Time Passages” App
So Charlie is developing an agroforest in Bahia with the idea that it will be sustainable without external support and provide enough to take care of everyone who works there with the concept that what one person eats, everyone eats. The creativity and inventiveness Charlie employs in this mission is a marvel. Can’t you see his Aquarius rising here?
It’s been quite a weekend here in Austin Angelique. I’ll leave you with a picture from Lake Travis. Say happy birthday to Charlie! We love you.
